Meet Dr. Rakoff

Dr. Rakoff founded the Fertility Center of Scripps Clinic in 1979. Four years later, he launched his in vitro fertilization (IVF) program. For over 25 years, Dr. Rakoff directed the IVF and Fertility Program at Scripps Clinic. This center was the first in San Diego dedicated exclusively to the provision of medical services for infertile couples, and the first San Diego IVF program to successfully achieve a pregnancy through in vitro fertilization.

Today, with his work in assisted reproductive technology, Dr. Rakoff continues to remain on the forefront of advanced infertility care. In his quest for optimal pregnancy success rates, he has moved his practice to San Diego Fertility Center in Carmel Valley, San Diego.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Rakoff has participated in various research studies in assisted reproduction, with a special emphasis on gamete transfer techniques and infertility surgery. He has lectured extensively at both local and national infertility conferences. He has also authored and published over 27 scientific papers and articles on IVF, uterine fibroids and endocrine dysfunction. Dr. Rakoff has taught at various residency programs and serves as a clinical preceptor to physicians from around the country who are interested in in vitro fertilization and infertility surgery. Dr. Rakoff may specialize in IVF, but he also provides a comprehensive array of diagnostic and fertility treatment services.

Dr. Rakoff received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began his specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, San Diego, where, following his residency, he completed a certified Research Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility in 1977. Upon completion of this Infertility fellowship, Dr. Rakoff served as a Major in the United States Army Medical Corps, stationed at Madigan Army Medical Center, where he was the Division Head of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Dr. Rakoff is board certified and a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. As a distinguished infertility clinician and surgeon, he is a charter member of the Society of Reproductive Surgeons (SRS). He is also a member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART).

Dr. Rakoff has been nothing but wonderful to my husband and I since we met him a couple of years ago at Scripps Clinic. We started seeing Dr Rakoff in Rancho Bernardo in 2010 to help with fertility problems. We followed him to the San Diego Infertility Clinic where we started the process. From day one, he was upfront with us and yes he did talk from a MAD Science view; we welcomed both points emotionally and scientific. Infertility was our only option to hVe children in that I have no fallopian tubes, he and the staff were helpful and understanding as well as professional about our chances.
Science can be tricky and hurtful news at times, but our positive spirit led us to try 3 times and we now have a baby girl that is 8 weeks old and healthy! We owe Dr. Rakoff and his a team a world of thanks for our 2 1/2 year old girl and our baby boy due in 2 months! I’ve read the other reviews here and must say that since fertility is such an incredibly personal and emotional process, I understand why some women feel frustrated and angry. However in now having successfully conceived 2 babies with Dr. Rakoff’s help, it’s been my experience that he is nothing but professional, thorough, caring and persistent. At least 1 of the reviews portrays him as irresponsible and flighty and I just couldn’t disagree more.

I have PCOS (which he diagnosed) and went through fibroid surgery, countless tests, Clomid, natural IUI, and finally Follistim with IUI – all under Dr. Rakoff’s care. Each step of the way was done with careful planning and consideration for possible risks. In fact, with my current pregnancy, I was having an unpredictable and erratic response to the Follistim and we almost gave up on the cycle altogether. But Dr. Rakoff suggested we persist with modified dosage and careful monitoring. Thanks to him we were successful and I’m looking forward to giving birth in 2 months.

After struggling with fertility issues and going through the process with 2 children, I feel fairly well versed in today’s standard protocols and methods. Dr. Rakoff consistently presented us with both potential upside and risk to anything we tried and ALWAYS respected our decisions. He’s not only a great doctor but a caring and kind man who gave us our best gifts ever. Thank you so much!

He understood our situation and allowed us to make our own choice after giving us a thorough pros/cons discussion (possibility of success and costs) of different meds and IUI vs. IVF. We concieved successfully after our first IUI. SDFC is a great professional clean office with a wonderful support staff. I feel they all as a team (from Frankie to the nurses to Dr. Rakoff) were very thorough in doing all they can to help me succeed in my journey to become pregnant

Dr. Rakoff,
I have to tell you how sorry I am it has taken me so long to write this, and for you having never met the miracle child you helped create, Christopher Dylan Steeley. I have thought of you so often since my son was born (on the same day as Chris’s husband, Steve, no less), and strangely enough, and I have no explanation for it, is usually when I am giving him a bath and am nowhere near a computer to send it. Of course, then I get pre-occupied and it leaves my mind until his next bathJ.

Anyway, I wanted to thank you more than you can ever know for the significant impact and work you did for me to realize my dream of having a child. I can’t believe my son is nearly two years old. He is a precious child who is entering his terrible twos, and I find it hard to believe how fast it has gone. He is the best thing that has EVER happened in my life. I could NEVER have had this child without the hard work you, Chris, and all those involved on the peripherals did to create him. I could go on and on, but will just tell you that the work you do is phenomenal, and if you ever doubt that you should slap yourself in the face and look at my son as a reason for what you doJ.
